ALIA Learning – Dekaaz

Posted on Friday, July 6th, 2012

At the recent ALIA Summer Institute in Halifax, I learned about a new poetic practice from my new friend Rachel Bagby (thanks to Bob Stilger for the introduction). The practice is called Dekaaz; Rachel describes it as “a small poetic form with big impact”.

The “form” is 10 syllables in three lines: 2/3/5. On the first morning of the Institute, after meditation, Rachel introduced us to this practice, asking us to consider our deep yearning with respect to our journey to the Institute at this point in our lives. After reflecting in silence, we composed our Dekaaz and shared our 10 syllables with two other colleagues. Then we shared with the larger group, speaking it out loud to the whole group and placing it (Post-its!) on a large compass drawn earlier by Barbara Bash.

This banner hung in a common space for the duration of the Institute. In other circumstances, we might share via Twitter, Facebook, or on our own blog.

I think it’s easy to imagine bringing this practice to the work we do with organizations or in communities to “elicit incisive insights, stimulate dialogue, and connect ourselves in ways that continue to bear fruit far beyond the initiating event”. Pause now and consider your next opportunity…and whether perhaps you want to become a Certified Dekaaz Facilitator. You’ll be able to find out more as soon as Dekaaz Facilitation is live.

Oh, and here’s my Dekaaz from that morning:
